Advancing Education for Sustainable Development through the Competences4ESD Training Event in Ljubljana
In December 2023, the Competences4ESD project achieved a major milestone with a highly successful short-term training event held at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, in Slovenia. This intensive five-day program brought together 18 Vocational Education and Training (VET) trainers, representing partner organizations, to focus on enhancing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Empowering Educators for a Sustainable Future
The event aimed to address critical challenges in ESD by equipping trainers with the knowledge, methodologies, and tools needed to foster sustainable development among learners. It was a key step in implementing the Competences4ESD training model, ensuring trainers could facilitate the development of ESD key competences in pre-service and in-service teachers.
Highlights of the Event
Participants were introduced to essential outputs of the project, including the Teacher’s ESD Key Competences Framework, the innovative training course, an educational role-play game, and a dynamic e-Learning platform. These tools are designed to integrate critical and systemic thinking, collaboration, and sustainability awareness into education.
The program featured:
- Interactive Workshops: Hands-on sessions allowed trainers to experience the educational role-play game and learn how to apply these tools in their training practices.
- Blended Learning Integration: The e-Learning platform was highlighted for its ability to overcome barriers to professional development, offering flexible training solutions.
- Knowledge Exchange: Participants shared insights and provided valuable feedback on the project’s outputs, ensuring continuous improvement and relevance.
Why This Event Matters
Education for Sustainable Development is a cornerstone of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Competences4ESD project aligns with this vision by building a network of qualified educators who can drive systemic change through innovative teaching practices. Events like the one in Ljubljana are critical in bridging gaps in competence development and fostering collaborative, forward-thinking approaches to education.
Looking Ahead
As the trainers return to their respective countries, they bring with them tools and strategies to pilot the Competences4ESD training course. Their role as multipliers will be instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of the project, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future.
