SCIBORG Research Activity – Laying the Foundation for board game

Alt Text

In the SCIBORG project, science literacy isn’t just a goal - it’s a mission. The recent research activity carried out by the SCIBORG team set the stage for creating an innovative educational tool: a science literacy board game. This phase of the project brought together partners, educators, and researchers to focus on how to translate the complexities of scientific inquiry into a fun, accessible, and educational experience.

About the project

What is Science Literacy?

Science literacy equips individuals with the understanding of how scientific knowledge is generated and evolves. It empowers them to critically assess information presented in the media and make informed decisions. Central to this is the scientific method—a structured, iterative process of observation, questioning, hypothesizing, experimenting, and concluding. However, conveying these ideas in traditional educational settings can be challenging, especially for youth.

The SCIBORG Approach

Through a comprehensive research activity, the SCIBORG team delved into the needs and preferences of its target groups: youth aged 16–24 and educators. Surveys among scientists provided valuable insights into what the public should understand about research. The results emphasized the importance of collaboration, curiosity, and understanding the iterative nature of science.

To make these concepts engaging, the SCIBORG board game will use a combination of mechanics such as set collection, drafting, and variable player powers. Players will take on roles as scientists and work to build the best research projects, mirroring real-world scientific processes and challenges.

Emotional and Learning Outcomes

The game aims to spark curiosity about science and make the research process feel more accessible. It also teaches players the structure of the scientific method and its application across different fields. The game is designed to be inclusive and engaging, ensuring that all players feel competent, autonomous, and connected.

What’s Next?

With the research phase complete, the SCIBORG team is moving into game development, ensuring that the concepts and insights gathered are integrated into an interactive, fun, and impactful tool. The next steps include prototype development, play-testing sessions, and fine-tuning the mechanics to align with learning objectives.

By fostering science literacy through innovative and interactive methods, SCIBORG is paving the way for a new generation of critical thinkers and informed citizens.
